Blue skies, green grass, and the barbeque sizzling…tempting us outdoors with family and friends, so here are some tips to help you create the perfect outdoor experience!

1. Purpose

To get the most out of your outdoor space, you need to think about how it will be planned and used.

  • Do you host dinner parties or barbeques?
  • How many do you entertain?
  • Does your space need to be kid or pet friendly?
  • Are you looking for a quiet space to relax and unwind?

2. Lay out

Each outdoor area should have a logical and functional connection to the inside of the house, for example, it’s a good idea to locate your outdoor entertaining area near your kitchen.

3. Surroundings

You need to make the most of the views your property has to offer. Be sure to arrange your sitting area so that it makes the most of the sun and your views.

4. Exposure

What direction your outdoor entertaining space faces can define its functionality. You need to consider the fact that some of the space may become unsuitable for use in the cold winters, or be too exposed to the sun in the summer. If it will be exposed to the sun in summer, you may want to consider getting some sort of shading for your space.

5. Wind Patterns

You will need to consider the usual wind direction in relation to your property and your outdoor area, as well as the wind direction at different times of the day. Consider whether your outdoor area is protected from the wind by your home, or surrounding buildings. Also, work out what the wind direction could be at the time of day that you’re planning on using your outdoor area, some areas could be calm in the morning and have a regular evening breeze.

6. Plant Selection

Choose easy-care plants in and around your outdoor living area, to ensure a low maintenance area. Also, keep in mind that plants that attract bees and other pollinators are good for your garden, but you may not want these plants in the middle of your dining area – no one likes pestering bugs hanging around.

7. Furnishings

Appropriate outdoor furniture will depend on your intended use of the space, you may want to relax outdoors or entertain guests. Make sure that you select furniture pieces that are comfortable, and that are practical, making sure that they’ll be able to withstand the varying weather conditions, be it sun, snow or rain. Don’t forget to bring out your interior style self and brighten up your space with patterns and colours.
