A granny flat requires council approval like any standard residential home. Tasbuilts complete package includes the council application, including all preliminary works as required by the council. The council term for a granny flat is an ancillary dwelling. This is a secondary dwelling on a property and may only be used in conjunction to the main house i.e. it cannot be rented out to non-family members. Most council’s have a size restriction which is usually 60m2 or 80m2, or up to 50% of the floor area of the main dwelling.
